Volvo Group donation to support refugee crisis
Created Date: 2015-09-23
The Volvo Group has decided to donate 5 MSEK to UNHCR, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, to support their work in providing refugees with emergency relief items such as shelter, food, water and medical care.
Right now, war and persecution in Syria, Afghanistan and Eritrea
force millions of people to leave everything behind and make the
perilous journey to safety. Hundreds of thousands of people risk their
lives in desperate attempts to reach Europe.
The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, is leading efforts to
protect those who have been displaced. A work that has never been more
relevant than today. Apart from supporting with emergency items, UNHCR
also protects the human rights of refugees. The donation from the Volvo
Group will be placed where it is regarded of most immediate use by
UNHCR.
“These last couple of days has really put an emphasis on the human
tragedies of the refugee crisis, and the risk it involves in escaping
from war zones to find safety elsewhere. Not least all the reports in
international media have shown us the magnitude of the crisis. I am very
proud that the Volvo Group is able to support UNHCR in their important
relief work,” says Volvo Group CSR-responsible Malin Ripa.
The Volvo Group is working on a broad range of activities to
support the development of local societies with focus on shared value
for our business and for the society. And in case of a disaster or
catastrophe, where monetary contributions are the most needed, the Volvo
Group has a disaster relief fund, approved by the AB Volvo Board of
Directors.
”We are tremendously pleased that the Volvo Group has chosen to
contribute to UNHCR and our work to support refugees who have had to
escape from their homes – these efforts have never been more relevant
than now. Thanks to the commitment from the Volvo Group more refugees
will receive shelter and possibilities for a safer future,” says Katinka
Lindholm, National Director Sweden for UNHCR.
